I added another thermometer to my display tank and found out the water is 10 degrees hotter then my Reef Keeper is reading. The new thermometer is an old school mercury type so I'm guessing it is more accurate then a digital type that requires a probe.

Im in the process of rectifying the problem. Slowly dropping the temp a few degrees at a time. Water was supposed to be 78 degrees and it was actually 88!

I have a few questions.

Would overly hot water create algae blooms?
What effect would 88 degree water have on LPS and sps?

Thx!

I was horrified wheni saw it. All the sps died last week. Which as a beginner didnt surprise me much but now i think i know why. LPS were doing so well, i just couldn't figure out why they started to dwindle. But i think they will come back.

Whats the proper way to reduce heat? I dropped it 4 degrees over a course of a few hours. Was that too quick?
