I had a velvet outbreak in my tank that was devasting to my tanks inhibitants and me :( All my fish died except my six line wrasse and bangaii cardinal. Not sure how these fish survived? I lost my beloved puffer, yellow tang, orange spotted blenny, longnose hawkfish, mystery wrasse, uspi foxface, bi-color dottyback, my two black/white clowns, maroon clown, yellow assessor. Just horrible. My eel seems uneffected (thank God) My question is what do i do now? I want to go fallow for two months but have those two remaining fish and my eel in the display tank. What is the route to take in my situation? I recently just moved the entire tank to a new location and ever since than everyhting went downhill FAST. I just bought a QT setup and in the process of setting it up so this never happens again. Thanks for any help...

are you sure you had a velvet outbreak and not a cycle?
When you moved did you use the same sand? If you did you probably ended up creating a bloom of aerobic bacteria releasing from disturbing the sand bed... That can also instantaneously kill fish.

That is also a very likely scenario.

Sorry for your losses. I too had a run of velvet 2 yrs ago. Unlike ich, there is no living with velvet. It only takes one outbreak to devastate your livestock.

The tank must be fallow for 8-10 weeks. Anything short of that and it might come back. I initially did 6 weeks and it wasn't gone.

All fish need to be qt'd. 2 weeks in cupramine at .5-.6 level will clear them of any velvet and ich. Cupramine can only be accurately tested with Seachem copper test.

All my new fish go 2 weeks in cupramine before goin in to DT.

Problem with starting a new qt is the tank going thru a cycle. I place NEW filter sponges between the sump baffles of my tank. This seeds them with bacteria for when I start up my qt. When I'm done adding fish, I toss the filter sponge and break down the qt. I always have a sponge ready to go.

Remember, after going through all this, anything you add thats not qt'd can carry it back in. Especially rock.

What does velvet even look like ? I often hear the name but never really understood what it was or how it looks. When Sandy hit, my tank was doomed, my sand was only two weeks old, so I rinsed it completely out again and restarted the reef with it. A lot died in there, so it's been a battle since trying to get everything back to normal, which it is finally coming around. I think it was due to the LR suffering the 36 degree hit for 14 days.
