I always use QT. for ick, i think is the only way to beat the parasite.
i got 2 weeks my fishes on QT, need 30 days more, i set up 15 gal. Plastic Container, heater, Hydro-Sponge Filter, i like this filter, keep water clean, hold bacteria + help w/O2, i also provide some privacy, by using some rough plastic sponge, usually used on mechanical filter,i run small Koralia pump, when i do water change on Main Tank, i save some water for QT (than ad. some Mardel CopperSafe ) i got a new Purple Tang , from my LFS, i see NO ick, than after few days , bad news, ICK show up, i have to remove all my rocks, got fish out. i run the Diatom filter , i gone run again before i return the fish , in Main Tank.
I got all my fishes for more than 7 years, i have to do the QT. :letitallo

this is my QT system

null_zps12ce381d.jpg

I used to get the fish from the LFS and put them right in my DT 5-6 days later  ich
I have tried to get rid of ich without taking the fish out of the DT in my opinion is nearly impossible to get rid of it because the parasite keep falling of the fish and coming back ,

I had a few fish with ich before and they did fight ich and it went away in the DT but I think that's depending on the immune system of the fish itself to be exactly my Yellow Tail Angel had ich all over I DIDN'T treat with medication and the ich went away but I tried the same with my hippo and I didn't work it was getting worse and worse I took him out tread with Mardel CopperSafe and both fish are alive today

To make sure I always QT my fish for 40 days with CopperSafe I don't care if I see the fish smiling at the LFS

For the people that messaged me saying if my achilles was covered in ich in my main tank and all my fish would get it and most likely loose some fish including my achilles and if I dont set up a QT Im asking for it. The achilles in the past few weeks has not had any ick on him and all my fish are fine. They never stopped eating and they never started gasping for air. It happens when I introduce new tangs to my tank and it always goes away. So you do what you do and Ill do what i do :)

I think part of the debate and reason for so much disagreement is misdiagnosis. I think fish can get white spots from lots of things not just ich. And maybe sometimes its ich and we dont know and we lose all our fish. I know i stopped caring about qt being the impatient fool that i am and one time I saw my royal gramma scratching and maybe had white spots. They went away after a while. I always feed well and my fish are pigs. Did i have ich...maybe...that means i still do then right? My foxface has some spots on him i saw the other day (nothing new added to tank..)..am i going nuts..no. I'm sure I'll be in the same boat as duke and the spots will clear up...and my tank will continue fine. Maybe it will infect all my fish and I'll be scrambling to qt and run fallow. We'll see...

All I'm saying is essentially sometimes i get a pimple...do i panic and think measles, mumphs, rubella, shingles???

The oceans a big place with lots of different parasites..i highly doubt 1/2 of the white spot diagnosis we see are ich or anything deadly. Unfortunately the one time it may be ich is when your going to lose everything...so you can have a process to prevent it or play russian roulette.

Kudo's on keeping that achilles healthy, i'm sure he's a beauty in that tank!
