Rinsing live sand will diminish the micro organisms living on it. Whoever rinses live sand should have just bought dead sand, because they lost the whole purpose behind what it is and paid a much higher price for it to lol Doh

You have to think about what you really expect to get out of live sand. If you're talking about live sand in a bag that's been sitting on the shelf for a few weeks, then all you are paying for is bacteria. That's a waste of money compared to dry sand and a piece of live rock. Live rock contains a very large amount of bacteria that will quickly populate the dry sand in your tank. If you're talking about live sand from an established system, full of bacteria, worms, microfauna, and coralline algae, then, yes, a scoop or two of that stuff is awesome. There is no way that a sealed bag of "live sand" will have anything worthwhile in it beyond bacteria.
