Wow that brings back memories from Hurricane Sandy.
It turned out I desperately needed a battery backup for my MP10 and they supposedly sold it. So I walked to Knickerbocker Village and walked up the 12 or so flights using a flashlight but no one was home.

Received an email from BRS who sells it. They suggest that you want to use a liquid that is already calibrated to the approximate density of reef water.
They imply, therefore, that using purified water may not be as accurate.
True or False?

Thats not exactly the case. You dont calibrate the refractometer to the density of reef water. Its calibrated to baseline on pure water. There are plenty of sources for pure water, your own RODI of course and steam distilled water available from drugstores. Think about the purity of distilled water which is often mixed with medications etc.

If you want to buy a sachet of water for a few dollars, have at it.

Here you go from the manufacturer's mouth:

John, All optical or light diode instruments like photometers and digital Refractometers from almost all manufacturers, for optimum accuracy, require calibration to zero and usually require using steam distilled water or clear RO water. Selling Calibration fluid for Brix and Seawater Refractometers is just a ploy to increase sales on the back side of the original instrument purchase and these ?calibration standards? have the risk of being contaminated either through dilution or evaporation or settlement; putting the instruments accuracy at risk.

Hope that this answers your question
