With the limited info and no pic, it's difficult to offer any advice.

Leathers can be temperamental at times and during certain periods when they are 'shedding' they may not open up for a while. Have you seen it shed a layer of it's skin from the upper portion of the toadstool yet? (it's very thin, almost translucent )

If they are about to die they will literally start to fall apart, often at the base.
Are you noticing anything like this?

I have the same problem...
Does it look anything like this. Mine went from looking like it was just closed to looking like it's not going to make it. It is shedding stuff from the crown and was trying to move to a different spot on the rock .This coral was awesome 3 weeks ago , one of the nicest in my tank , spreading a good 5 or 6 inches. No idea what happened! My nitrates are 0, phosphates ??? but other corals are ok and no real algae problems. The time frame is one week from one pic to the other..

Sorry to see yours Will...that pic on the right is an excellent example of what the stem looks like when they begin to die. You might consider fragging some of the undamaged tissue from the top portion and see if it heals up and you can grow out another one.

Thanx for the idea....it was so beautiful, I hate to cut it up. But it also looks to me like it's on it's way out. As you well know, it's driving me nuts trying to figure out what the heck happened. What makes it worse is that I have a smaller one that is doing great.

I just sliced the bottom third of the stem off and found a snail that the stem had grown over. I think it when it died , it may have started the stem to rot and that was the problem!!!
