Can anyone give me some of their live brine till Tuesday? The store ran out of it, and I got to give TLC to a fish who only takes that for food.
Thank you, Depth

I have a ton of frozen brine shrimp in my freezer... (I froze them myself and know they're fresh young brine shrimp). You're welcome to those if you think they'll work. I also have some brine shrimp eggs if you want to hatch some yourself.

Guys THANK YOU so much!
Digital especially.

I found and reserved some at Petland!!
Turns out, most Petland locations have it, even those that don't sell live fish. Good to know...
I've decided not to hatch, and I also hope I can wean my fish soon to prepared foods.... I have two beautiful Filefish since yesterday - an Orange one and a Mimic. Should not be so hard.

I have Selcon vitamins at home - do you know how many drops are needed to enrich it? I don't want to make the water so thick that brine die...
Say, how many drops would you put in the little cup that New World Aquarium sells them in?
And for how long can they survive in the fridge after you buy them?

I would consider hatching your own as the little ones are more nutritious than the adult brine shrimp that are sold everywhere. It cost me about $10 to set up the hatchery and it only takes about 24 hours to hatch them. (I'd be happy to show you my setup) You can freeze what you don't use and not worry about what's in the water the purchased ones come in. Even if your fish are eating flakes, it's a nice treat sometimes.

You can usually keep them in the fridge for a few days before they start to die off.

I've actually researched this quite a bit and realized it's move involved than I'd want to go in just one little dorm room....
*
I am surprised by what you're saying - that stores sell "adult" brine and not young ones? I've seen them only at New World - the are pretty visible, about 3-4 millimeter. Is this the adult size?
*
How can I enrich them with Selcon? Or with smth else?

Everything I've seen almost turned me off the idea. I use a small rubbermaid container with a hole drilled in it for an airline. I sit it on the corner of my tank when I hatch and put it away when I'm not hatching. It takes almost no room at all.

Yup... you can barely see the baby brines.

That one I'm not sure about.

On another topic - Eric, do you know someone in the area who is really good at diagnosing diseases?...

If you post the symptoms here or take pics someone should be able to help.

Interesting... When you quote me, I can't see the text of my quotes.. I guess that is more of a computer problem than a fish problem ;-)
What I'll say of the hatching offer is: if my fish cannot be weaned any time soon, I will take hatching lessons from you!! :goldfish:

Ahem! Did you say Orange Filefish?
Oxymonacanthus_longirostrisAQ.jpg

Hopefully, this is not one of the filefish you own. :happysad: Here an excerpt from this article: Filefish

Oxymonacanthus longirostris (Bloch & Schneider 1801), the Harlequin Filefish or Orange Spotted Filefish in the aquarium interest. The most commonly offered member of the family... and rarely alive for more than a week in captivity. In the wild almost only eats Acropora polyps.

Good luck either way.

p.s. If that is one of the fish, which LFS told you they eat brine shrimp?

No, it is not a Longnose.... ;-) Thank you for the concern, though... I've researched them a bit before I got these two... This one is the Orange File, a 4 inch beauty with a "horn", orange from head to toe... Does not eat yet, though. It ate only brine at the store. First night I found it sleeping on the filter intake... I don't have overlow or sump on the QT, just a simple small Penguin 250, with very small suction, so - no damage to the fish at all!!! They are a little crazy , those files... Both very docile, very easygoing - but a little wacky. They both sit on their noses (mouths) all the time.
There is a very small white spot on the tip of the Orange File's fin. The tip's integrity is broken, may be shipping trauma. It's very minor, a microscopic piece of the fin tip is missing. And there is the white spot. Fungi? Bacterial? I am not sure. I think to wait and see if it gets bigger.

Brine Shrimp Napaulii are tiny dots, good for feeding coral and fish fry. If the brine you hatch are only a few days old then they are too young to be of any use to anything but your corals.

Brine shrimp in general are not nutritious for your fish. If all you fed your fish was brine shrimp they would end up dying. Mysis are much better.

You can also add selco or selcon, but that only helps but so much.

Both my clownfish and wrasse eat brine shrimp when they are very young... the corals take in the rest. They're not very nutritious, but add some variety to their diet and I think they're a nice treat sometimes. If you raise them and feed them properly you can raise their nutritional value considerably.

Like I said earlier, good luck. I've found many finicky eating fish will eat live brine shrimp at the LFS. As has been rehashed already in this thread, brine shrimp alone, suck.

Post some pics of both of your filefish for identification of the species and the potential illness.

Both filefish actually are doing great - already eating, no signs of illness etc. I actually know their names: one is Pervagor melanocephalus, Orangetail or Redtail Filefish, and the second is a Blacksaddled Filefish, Paraluteres prionurus (the one that mimics the Valentini Puffer).

They are a lot of fun! The Valentini Mimic sleeps vertical on its nose, pretending to be just another branch of the coral... Temperament is excellent. There is no bickering in the QT, although there are 4 fishes in there (the two files, one XL blue chromis and one Village Belle Damsel).
I am falling in love with Files!!!!!

REG THE BRINE - I bought adult brine from Petco. I gut-loaded it with an Algae sheet since I did not have spirulina. Is this good enough?...
Also, Do I have to feed the brine every time before I feed it to the fish? It lives in my fridge, and the algae i fed them is still in their water - i assume they are eating it constantly. (do they eat while they are slowed down in the fridge?)
