Is it possible for me to use an adjustable valve to slow down the return to my main tank from the sump? I have a mag 1200 and was worried if I put something to restrict the return flow it might damage the pump. The reason for me doing this is all of a sudden the return water is blowing around the sand in my tank like crazy. Which is causing all different kinds of issues with rock work and corals.

Before placing a ball valve on the return line, can you adjust the nozzledirection in the tank also if you have powerheads make sure thats not the cause
Yeah Ive done that but no matter where Im pointing it the sand is kicking up, so I was just curious if putting a ball valve would some how damage the return pump.

how big is your tank? Also have you tried splitting the return into tank this way you keep the flow?
I don't know what they are called but they are knuckled and you can bend them in multi directions.
Ever since I cleaned the pump its working stronger and better lol. Its a 57 gallon... I had the mag 12 from my old 180. I know from the initial build it was going to be too strong but it worked for almost a 2 years without any issues. Now I go clean the pump and its blowing sand all over the place lol. I know the splitters you are talking about, I may look into that but the issue is I have a mp40 on the other side of the tank so Ill see. Thanks.

I think the splitting idea is great and is what you should do. If you want the quick easy fix but a filter sock at the end of the return or cover some of the pumps intake with a filter sock or you can wrap filter padding, and thing which will restrict your flow.
