Hi fellow reefers...I'm thinking about placing my sump and other equipment in the basement just two floors below to alleviate the weight...what kind of pump (brand/model no.) will I need to get the return water back up. I'm thinking roughly 25-30ft from basement sump to display tank. Thanks in advance.

Thanks jimmy, dacebrown...should I go with a more powerful one (like more feet of head)? I don't need the flow from it though, I will have other powerheads to create water flow in the tank. Or is it beneficial to have more?

Yeah the blue lines aren't going to cut it at the head you'll have. Go with a reeflo dart/snapperdart.

They have a more powerful line. Over size it by a fair share and gate it back. Just look at their site and decide what model you want by how much your willing to oversize/how much you're willing to pay.

The reeflo's are pressure rated so the 45's and 90's wont effect them that much. Check out the barracuda gold, it's a great pump. Bare in mind these pumps are loud so put some padding under it and try to have it in a spot where the noise won't be heard.

every pump will be affected by 90's and 45's. would he be better going for something overrated and dialing it back then be at close to what he needs and being stuck not being able to add anything to his system? I say go for as big as you can go :)

I think I have narrowed it down to either Reeflo Manta Ray Gold or Tiger Shark Gold as Dacebrown indicated earlier...next level up would be the commercial grades which I will need to convert to 220V.

The Barracuda Gold won't cut it due to the low head...and it's gonna push it to the max causing more heat.

I'm also thinking about getting flex tube (spa flex) instead of using pvc to ease up the friction and pressure. But it's basically just straight up and down with maybe a 45* or 90*. Any suggestions of the strength and durability of those flex tubes?

I always go just regular pvc.

Friction loss aka stiction(I know its a funny term) has to do with the material. Flex pvc or regular pvc will have about the same friction loss. The water actually if you were able to look straight down the pipe while waters flowing would look likes ring around the very inside of the pipe that kind of rolls inside towards the outside and then in the middle the water goes straight through that outer disturbed ring. The thing that effects it is how porous the pipe material is. Each type of PVC whether it be flex or regular schedule 40 are too similar to have noticeable difference.

Pressure on the other hand has to do with the inner diameter of the pipe. 3/4 flex and 3/4 straight schedule 40 will have the same pressure requirements to flow the same amount of water through them.

I'd just use normal pvc myself.
