Yes and no, I'm frugal so I don't splurge like I want to (says the woman with a packed tank). As far as spending a little too much time on the hobby, well that's a different story.

Reef tanks are money pits
Especially if you steal from peter to pay paul

If your house, wardrobe, car, etc can use some attention and instead you buy "aussie", "rare" corals you are stuck in a pit and have your priorities misaligned

well, actually its quite a longterm investment compared to other money pits--video games--70 bucks for launch and few months later half price and few more months later, u dump em+stuffed animals u dump em after few washes+designer clothes--totally royal pain--u feel too heartbroken to dump em but so shameful to wear em outa fashion

when growin up, they appeal to u both financially and mentally--u can frag a tad and at least refund some money :)

Long term commitment if you are serious about the hobby maybe, investment not so much.

I dont know anyone that has "invested" on a tank and shut it down to walk away with more money.

Investments grow
hobbies are money pits , RC cars and reef tanks are two that I can think some ppl simply should not indulge in.

Agree with Paul if u can't afford to buy the latest and greatest equipment / coral / salt there r cheaper alternatives !
My latest build is 225 gal I bought it used and did all work myself so it was in my budget to buy the system used and installed would have been 5-6k maybe more I did get lucky with the guy gave me an amazing deal on the tank used but there r deals out there !

a reef tank that has more than a kenia tree is a money pit.

Not everyone uses the online boards, many are still paying $70 for salt and $65 for medium yellow tangs not to mention coral prices.

yes, some things can be found reasonably but again, not everyone does their shopping on craigslist nor online boards.

A reef tank tends to turn ppl into compulsive shoppers because a frag is just a frag so we need one of each then you need the basic equipment to support it. Some poor souls fall in the trap of equipment brands and blow thousands swapping out equipment over and over and over.

Once you equipped your tank, stocked your tank you can be in the hole by a lot and some ppl simply can't afford it hence they steal from peter to pay paul.

a fish tank is as cheap as you want it to be, a reef tank with more than just hair algae and a kenia tree is never ever ever cheap.

$960.00 per year to just maintain a fish tank is a lot for some folks.

If you like it and can afford it great, if you like it and cannot afford it avoid reefs and avoid expensive fish.

$960.00 a year is a lot to some folks but I never had a dog and I would imagine they cost about that to keep. (That includes electric)
I don't use test kits, change water 5 or 6 times a year, built most of my rock (although I did collect it to start the tank) I feed clams and live worms which is probably my biggest cost.
I can afford test kits, controllers, dosers and all of that, but I feel they are not needed so I don't use them. It is not a matter of cost. My tank is 42 years old so by now I know what it needs and what I don't want no matter what it costs. Fish live for many years so their price is not a factor. My fireclown cost probably $20.00, but I have had him for 20 years, so it was a dollar a year. Not to bad.
