I thought I'd provide an update. Still running the HOT magnum with the micron filter. Lots of brown smelly gunk came out of it. I just cleaned it and put it back in place.
Assuming the amount of gunk shrinks, i plan to remove it and run a more active medium. I'm leaning toward carbon right now. Any suggestions on an other/better option?
Also, since it seems the problem may be that the tank is too "clean", I plan to add a fish. Something hardy, but before I do that I'd love to know what you all think of that idea. The water parameters all test out fine and the water itself smells good.
Thanks again to everyone that gave me suggestions and feedback!!!
Making progress! I ran a HOT magnum micron filter for 4 days, along with a rigged powerhead with in and out covered with more micron filter pads. The first 3 days I had to clean them out within 12-18. On the 4th day the amount of gunk building on the pads was much lower. On day 5 I switched the Magnum to run GAC, but kept the jury rigged powerhead running. This has been 24 hrs and I'm seeing results! The filaments seem to be thinning out, but still covering the rocks. The snails seem more active and the corals look just a little bit happier. I'm not sure if the environment is improving now that i've pulled some of the gunk out of the water column or I'm just seeing a bandaid solution working since I still have the filters running. Once I remove the extra filtration, I'll know for sure.
One thing I've learned from this: water changes are not always the best way to fix problems.
