Simple answer , yes IF CLEANED ONCE A WEEK OR MORE !!!
if you cannot clean it at the very least once a week then you will have terrible nitrate and phosphate problems because naturally canister filters are detritus collectors thats how they work and keep your tank clean , for freshwater or fish only tanks not a big deal for reefs not very good

Even if you use it just as a carbon filter if you leave it running 24/7 then u would have to clean it once a week , if you already have the canisrer you could use it as a water polisher and stuff it with floss and carbon and then just run it for 2 hrs or so every 2 weeks maybe just to keep the water nice and clear

Yes reactors do typically work like canister filters however without all the head pressure , very small sponges which are very coarse , and no bio media

And canister filters are generally used in a sump after mechanical filtration either skimmer or filter sock or both which removes 95% of the detritus before it even comes near the reactor

canister is not suited to remove Nitrate, there for it is not suitable for a "reef" corals and inverts are sensitive to nitrate.

the question is why not use a skimmer?

I disagree with your reasoning but agree that a skimmer is better , both do simmilar tasks , mechanical filtration , however protien skimmers are just more efficient and easily kept clean which makes them well suited for reefs where as canisters are a pain in @$$ to clean and everyone gets lazy and will forget to clean the canister making them a "nitrate factory" though a skimmer which is not maintained and allowed to overflow back into the sump technically is a nitrate factory as well because it put all the dissolved organic compounds right back into the tank

No i know that was the point i was trying to make , if both are neglected they with both become "nitrate factories" but thats why we use skimmers rather than canister because they are efficient and simple no one would clean a canister filter once a week that would be a terrible task that would get old in 2 weeks lol
