Do I even need a filter been running a fluval canister but everyone saying canister is no good for my reef can I use hang on back for some filtration or just use my skimmer only and no filter at all
I used a canister filter on a small 20gal reef for over a year before breaking down. as long as you clean it relatively frequently shouldn't be disastrous.
But you really don't need it if you have enough LR.
If you are using it just for carbon, mechanical filtration, and some extra flow in a smaller tank you could always switch to a carbon reactor.
fluval canister is no good for reef tank for sure! hang on filter even much better, but if u have sump with filter chamber build n plus using skimmer,so that gotta be the best choice! good luck with your reef!
Simple answer is: If you have a sump then use a protein skimmer and anything else you want to throw in the sump for filtratrion...If you don't have a sump ...then use an HOB with carbon, chemi-pure, sponge , floss or whatever....can even use an HOB skimmer if you're bioload is a lot or if it makes you feel better...
A canister filter is fine ...but they are such a PITA to clean that it usually gets left too long and becomes a problem ..
I have a Fluval 205 and 405 that I never use and have become a part of my vast collection of stuff...can never have too much fish stuff..LOL
