this is insane. But ive known that already. but its crazy how the price goes sky high when it hits us reefers..

? for example, collectors are paid USD 0.07 for green
chromis

; this rises to USD 0.35 when the exporters sell to the importers and USD 5
at the retailers

one small-sized Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kaudernii)) is
bought for USD 0.05 from the fishers

it sells for USD 0.45 by the middlemen to the exporters

the
importers pay the exporters USD 2.25 per fish

which is finally sold by the retailers to the hobbyists for
USD 26 for this one fish

In my opinion, suggestion #7 is very important, if not the most important. Everything starts with education. Without the understanding of why we need to do things a certain way, we ALL are susceptible of falling to the allure of the mighty dollar. Unless you're a shaman living on a mountaintop somewhere; which then you'll have bigger problems like where to plug your air pump to keep your fish alive to start.

I hope to see another entity's attempt at some sort of governance. Without this, there WILL always be a bunch of unscrupulous people finding ways to get under fence. Yes, I'm looking at you, stealth vendors.

At the end of the day, we can speak with our wallets (suggestion #9). With all the mechanisms mentioned in the article, it will certainly raise the cost of this hobby.
There's a lot of righteousness flowing through MR these days, are you willing pay more for some of that righteousness to come into fruition? Don't answer that, it's rhetorical.

Thanks for sharing, Randy.

I'm sure this contentious debate will continue to affect the hobby until more stringent regulation is advocated. Part of the problem is the immense demand for marine animals. And there is a blatant disregard when it comes to acquiring the latest rare species, with little consideration to marine biodiversity. I totally agree that education is key and I have to ask: Does the average hobbyist make a sufficient inquiry about the origin of the LS and are they aware of how the fish, or coral was obtained?
As of late I am making a conscientious decision to primarily trade/buy from other hobbyists.

Widdy I don't understand your point about stealth vendors. I have an idea of what a stealth vendors is, but perhaps there?s a different meaning.
Whether the buyer agrees with the methods used by MO is not at issue, they are still supporting the market by buying the LS without asking questions first. Education is integral to this plight, otherwise the pressing concerns of sustainability will persist.
