Get a sump....

If you are willing to empty out your tank to have it drilled......great.

If not:
although there are stories with external Over-Flow boxes, I never had a problem when I ran them.

I think a better question is why do you want to upgrade? If you're just wanting to get rid of your fluval for something that seems better it may not be neccessary. If your goal is to keep a softy tank that can be done without a wetdry or sump. In fact for softies you could use what you already have.

I ran a nice reef for about a year in a regular 55, not drilled, no sump and it was great.
