I have not done my due dilligence and have no idea whether or not there has been other set ups for selling used/new items in the marketplace but I still am in the mood to share what I think would be a more efficient way to sell items.

I believe that if there were an easier interphase to interact with which categorizes the items, more items would be sold. For instance I am in the market for a new tank. How about a marketplace tab showing just the tanks that are up for sale. I want a sump, a sump tab, a powerhead or pump.... make that a section as well. I am sure there are many ways to set up tabs to organize the system in a better fashion. You get the point... lol

How come I only have one page to look at for whats on sale? Perhaps I am not using the site correctly.

More importantly, I love the website and enjoy reading everyones posts! I just wanted to say what i thought would make a better marketplace. In the case that i am misusing the website, (which is probable)
, please tell me what I am doing wrong!

We will look into it and put it into consideration. Its just tuff because alot of people cannot post in the correct forum as it is now. But a search as cmantis had posted would help you find what you are looking for.

People sell multiple things at the same time, so they can't, nor should they, be setting up in different threads. Some people are selling whole tank setup, which include the livestock and equipment. Others maybe selling the livestock and equipment but keeping the tank and stand. In a lot of case deals are also made on what or how much you buy. So, it's not that easy just to separate threads into buckets.

I understand it may be a difficult endeavor to set up, I just think there are ways to make it a more enjoyable/efficient experience.

I do appreciate CMantis' insight about using the search function, however, I am not sure If I use the search function to the best of its capabilities.

Also using the search function to look for specific items kind of eliminates the purpose of the marketplace. I would love to have to ability to look at items in a more categorized manner. Maybe a tab for full setups vs individual dry items etc...

It has nothing to do with it being difficult to setup, the problem is you have people selling all of kinds of different items at once, ranging from equipment to livestock. We don't want to have multiple threads for each person, it will just make it very confusing and clogs up the board. You're also going to wind up having things post crossing over into the threads, as someone that is selling one thing is going to mention that he's also selling something else in another thread. It's not that difficult right now to find thing in the market, then again the board isn't about the market place.

I definetly think the hardware and live stock should be seperate , its like that on anither forum i use and i like it much better its easier to find what your looking for , but you cannot break down the equipment forum into specific items it would be way too dificult but two seperate one for livestock one fir equipment qoukd be nice

So here's an idea that could be done albeit much more work to implement.

If there were a checkbox to select when putting up a fs thread with what your selling.. ie

Fish
Coral
Tank
Equipment

Maybe more specific..depending on layout options...you'd be able to pick one, some, all or none...

This way its one forum, but in your search option you could search the for sale for all threads with fish checked off..would only find those threads appropriately tagged.

Or we could optionally all start using hashtags... :)

Every other reef site that I frequent separates livestock and dry Goods. Seems to work very well, but I don't care either way :) I'll find what I need.

Whats the difference. Ill put my address and zip code in and I still get people asking where am I in LI LOL. People dont read the entire thread. Making 10 different categories will confuse things WAY more. This is the way its been set up for years and it works just fine. You want something there is a easy way "SEARCH"

100% agree with both of his comments. It would be too much for no reason. I do however and I always felt it might make sense to do livestock and equipment separately but then again there isn't THAT much stuff for sale opn here that it's out of control. I think a rule should be that it is MANDATORY to post location as well as price or thread will be deleted especially if someone's avatar on the side says they are in brooklyn let's say but they are really in jersey etc. Or New york or just Jersey or even Long Island. Long Island is big..nassau and suffolk make a big difference you should put your town. It's just misleading and I think that's part of why there is a lot of flake behavior. I'm sure it would happen anyway but the more we prevent shenanigans the less there will be.

I don't think subcategories for different for sale items will help. As mentioned before some people sell multiple things together, some with a "not parting out" option.

I do however like how a thread in the marketplace is structured on nano-reef. Here is their example of structuring a for sale thread.

Equipment make/model/size: Vyair Pumped 50G Per Day RO System
Age and condition: 3 Months old - As New Condition
Quantity for sale: 1
Delivery or Collection: Either
Reason for sale: No longer use it
Price: ?90
Postage and Packaging (If applicable): Deliver at a cost of ?15
Location(Town): Kirkcaldy
Postcode: KY2 3R1

A picture of the item must be used. This must be YOUR OWN PICTURE. Not a google image or a stock manufacturer image.

I've always said at least do a dry goods and a live stock thread. That would make it a little easier to look up things.
But it will fall on def ears. No one does anything around here

I agree with b-ridge..I have seen on other forums that they have dry goods category and live stock category. Which makes much more sense if someone is looking to buy equipment then its just easier to to go to dry goods section......
