I'm not to worried about it. After all I already dealt with 7 feet of water in that room from hurricane sandy. Whats 30 to 40 gallons? A drop in the bucket! Just kidding But what I've read is if your going to use shims make sure you use shims that run the entire length of the stand. Not just the corners or the weight of the tank will be unevenly distributed down which can also be damaging to the tank. In time the stand bends. With a rug most of the time all points of the stand are absorbing that weight and bowing is less likely to occur.
