I opted for bb setup. I initially had rocks stacked on glass with nothing underneath. I have since placed a flat PVC sheet under all of the rock work. Although it was a time consuming adventure i am much more comfortable having something under the rock work. There are some pros and cons for each setup, I find it easier to vacuum up detritus and such, but some fish and critters are not available bc of bb tank. I don't have sps, but i would imagine with no sand you could ramp up the flow with no worries and make for some happy coral. MikeC tank helped me decide on bb. His tank is packed with color and i believe he has a white cutting board under his rockwork, that in al honesty you can't even tell is I the tank

I went DSP and regret it. A lot of detritus gets trapped under, goby and shrimp keep moving the sand around, then up the flow for SPS and the sand gets stirred up and goes everywhere. I would go BB if I had to restart.

I went with BB. I put down egg crate and placed rocks over thats. Then I cover the space that can be seen with white tiles. You can technically just put tiles over the egg crate then rocks over that.

Bare bottom with 1/2" starboard on my 240 gallon cube which helps reflect light back up and to prevent accidents (dropping a heavy rock and breaking the bottom glass of the tank). Also have a 270 gallon which had 5" of sand and has slowly melted over time. It's now about 1 - 3" in most places. If you use sand, you'll need a good CUC (sand sifting starfish, cucumbers, nassarius snails, etc...) to keep it clean. Good luck and welcome back!

to be honest i dont see the eggcrate in his tank, i focus and concentrate in Corals, Tony is right, if u want to trap the detritus, eggcrate will do the best, i use for fresh water, then spifon the bottom, worst for reef.
In my case i use nothing in bottom, run Koralia 7 (right corner) some time for less then one hour, all detritus go right on overflow box. The corals in the front of the Aquas. gone was temp. there.I try to copy my Avatar.lol
