New tank cycle process

Since vodka or vinegar promotes bacteria bloom, Can I use this method to start the cycle of my tank??

why not just use a small piece of raw shrimp to kick start it. I've also had luck with Dr. Tim's One and Only to seed the tank with beneficial bacteria.

if i use DR Tim's how long before I introduce fishes in the tank?

I've always used pure ammonia from ace hardware to jump start my cycle but I also use dry rock. Dosing ammonia is much more accurate and I've had success. Cycle length will depend on whether ur using live rock, sand from an established tank, etc.

With Dr Tim's I'd pour the whole bottle in, then add some pure ammonia to get the cycle really started. Especially if you are using dry base rock. I'd give it a week or 2 with with dosing ammonia to 2ppm and then testing that it is gone in 24 hours.

It would really help if you put a small piece or 2 of live rock from a LFS to seed the rest of the rocks and sand in your tank.

Dr. Tim's One and Only is a great product and I will always use it to cycle my system.... I did an experiment with it about 2 years ago and my tank was cycled in 7 days..... I also recommend that you use your test kits and make sure that you are getting acceptable readings before adding the livestock... good luck and keep us posted

in contrast,

Decaying Proteins/Fish wastes provide ammonia for nitrogen-fixing bacteria


Cycling for sugar is does not equal cycling for ammonia


Fish/inverts produce ammonia compounds, not sugars =D

hopefully bikeboss chimes in but indeed, adding nitrifying bacteria spores puts Cycling in turbo mode IF YOU GIVE THE BACTERIA IN THE BOTTLE FOOD (ammonia, urea)

If you're not on any meds nor a drinker/smoker I HEARD YOU CAN USE HUMAN URINE TO CYCLE! =D

I am not sure about the human urine but you are correct, the bacteria work so quickly that you might miss the cycle and think that it has not began

I am going to the event tomorrow and buy some rock from Marco rocks and then order 30-40 lbs rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater, Hopefully it will come with enough life to help seed my dry rock...

I used fish food and live rock from my other tank.... When I saw my ammonia start to raise I added the bottle of Dr Tim's to the tank and let it do its thing.....

Ditto - that's what I did.

I used 1/4 cup human urine to cycle my 175 gallon tank with 100lbs of live rock. No snake oil products. 5 weeks later fully cycled. No lights on. No protein skimmer. Until after 0 nitrite 0 ammonia.When nitrate is present that's when a water change is done. Protein skimmer turned on. First fish added.Patience is key!! Happy Reefing!

Higly recommend you get ammonia chloride from dr time. These drops help you make your tank to a preferred ammonia level. I usually make the tank go as high as 6.0 ammonia or what ever is the darkest green. Than I use sachem stability--follow the instructions and continually added it to my biomedia.
