it could of just landed in that spot and took off on your overflow. Nutrients and phosphates could be a big cause of it spreading like that .. A good cleanup crew along with good husbandry and that algae won't last

are you dosing anything
lighting (how long are you running and what kind of lighting)
Fuge
Filter socks
and whatever else you can think of
If you're using tap water, which my sister did at the beginning, it will cause the algae to grow that bad because of all the nutrients you're importing.
+1 are you using Ro/DI water. Over feeding causing high level of phosphate. You can run GFO in a reactor to bring down your phosphate. What is your Phosphate level? Remove it and do a water change.
