I'm getting close to start stocking my 75 gallon tank. Below are the fish I'm considering getting and in the order I would add them in. I'd appreciate any feedback you guys have had keeping these fish and any substitutions you would make:

Blue hippo tang- I plan on getting a juvenile tang to start the tank. Since they can be ich magnets and I don't have a quarantine, I'd prefer to start with this fish and observe him for a few weeks before I add another fish

Blue spotted jawfish- I want to add him early on so he can establish a burrow and free me up to layout corals on my sandbed. I have a 3" sandbed with spare shells laying around. Will be adding some crushed coral for him as well.

Pair of clownfish- Also plan on getting these as juveniles, just not sure what type yet.

Helfrichi firefish- I'll have an insect screen cover for this fish and the BSJ. I know they can be a problem with other firefish/gobies but I have enough hiding spots in the 75 that I'm hoping it'll be fine.

Mandarin- I have a 15 gallon refugium (in a 30G sump) with live rock/macro. I'm getting an order of copepods that I'll place in there and will let them multiply for a while before I think of adding one. My display tank also has about 100 lbs of live rock

Flame angel- This will be the last fish I add due to them being a little more aggressive than the others. I know it's a hit or miss with them nipping at corals but if he does, I'll have to place him in my sump til I can find him a new home, hopefully I won't have to

This tank will be a mixed reef with a CUC of various snails and scarlet hermit crabs. I don't think I'll be adding any shrimp but likely a couple Linckia starfish down the line. I also plan on having a BTA once the tank is ready for it.

Should I change the order of how I'm adding them? Any other fish I can add that will go well with these?

Thats a pretty good plan and stocking list. Interested if you have any issues with the flame angel...contemplating trading some of my fish out for one of them.

Thanks. How about you get the flame angel and tell me how it goes?? lol

I'll have to keep a close eye when I get one but really like this fish. Also considering adding a bangaii cardinalfish to the mix

..but really thats a pretty light bioload..you have room for a couple of cardinals.

Yea, I was thinking of adding more just unsure of what to get. Since the BSJ spends most of his time in his burrow, the firefish tends to hide alot and the mandarin will spend his time scavenging rock/sand, I figured I had more swimming room.

I'm considering a melanurus or leopard wrasse and a couple of anthias or cardinalfish. I'd like to have a lemonpeel angel but I hear these are even more prone to nipping at corals than the flame angel. Another thing that worries me about the wrasse is that they would be competing with my mandarin for pods.

Either way, what I do know is I'm starting with the blue hippo. Only another wk or so...

Has anyone been able to keep a leopard wrasse with a mandarin?? I'm a bit worried about the wrasse taking up all the pods from the mandarin.

Stock list is looking more like:
- blue hippo tang
- blue spotted jawfish
- pair of clownfish
- helfrichi firefish
- mandarin
- pair of bangaii cardinalfish
- bartletts anthias
- leopard wrasse
- flame angel

Looks good. I will be adding pods on a weekly bases for a while. You have a bunch of pod eaters. Get pods from different sources. If you would like I can add a few pieces of filter pads to my fuge and get pods for you.

there is a thread here from paulb about feeding white worms to mandarins. i might pass on the fame angel, although its a great look fish, and maybe look at one of the reef safe angels. lamarck or swallowtail maybe. not as striking in apprarance. i have both and they are model cotizens. leopards are nice looking fish that could be difficult to keep, but the wrasse family can provide a ton of options for you to choose from. cant go wrong with the anthias for activity and coloring. good luck with setup

Id be afraid of the leopard wrasse and madarin competing and starving out. As for other wrasses you should check out some of the fairy/flasher wrasses instead of the leopard or melanarus. Lots of color and peaceful as can be like mckosker or solarensis wrasses. Ive heard melanarus can wreck havoc on your cuc. Knock on wood your flame angel would be a good citizen, i know my coral beauty always had been.

@sharkbait: Thanks for the offer, I'll keep that in mind when I'm ready to start adding pods. I know the leopard wrasse may compete with the mandarin for pods but which others on my list will be going after pods? I feel all fish at some point may be opportunistic and eat pods if they're in their way but will any of these other fish hunt after them??

@thiry6: Thanks, yea the wrasse and flame angel are the two I'm most iffy about. I love the look on both of them so we'll see what happens. I may end up taking my chances on the flame angel and keep a close eye. I do plan on having alot of corals...

@Yani: I hear ya. I'm not crazy about the fairy/flasher wrasse though. I think I've already ruled out the melanurus due to their issues with inverts. Had to rule out the six line wrasse for the same reason. What would you recommend to go with this stock list other than a wrasse since they don't quite seem to fit too well?

Maybe long nose hawk fish, it is described as reef safe with caution, I had a pair for awhile they didn't go near shrimp at all. They were around 2+ inches. Both jumped to demise though but with a BSJ in mix I'm sure you will have tight fitting lid. Check out foxface and Midas Benny too
