light spill

i just bought a giesseman halide/t5 fixture and the light spill and glare are pretty bad.
is a hood the only way to fix this, its really annoying and i don't like a hood.
any suggestions? thanks.

Do what mike paletta did and put some pieces of plastic draping arround the fixture but be careful because of the heat.

That is the issue most ppl have halides is that most of the light is actually wasted, but a canopy would be the best bet. Or lower the light so its not so spread out in the room.

If the spill is that bad than the fixture is likely hung too high. That's a very deep tank front to back to try and cover.

A well designed reflector such as the lumenbrite suffers from almost no spill. Lumping all halides together is not a good idea. The issue is common to fixtures with designs like the geismanns.

its only 8" above tank now, can't really go lower cause of heat.
i'll most likely have to make a canopy. it makes feeding and maintenance a pain and i like the look without it.

yea it has such a shallow reflector.

You can make an open top canopy that will allow you to hang your lights over the canopy, hence no fixture removal should you need to remove the canopy.

If you also do a hinged open front maintenance is a breeze.

Basically copy the style of the Monterey canopy and make it open top.

Edd, just curious why you're using the Geismann instead of the Sfiligoi that you're selling? The Sfiligoi gives less spill and better coverage from what I have seen an experienced.

i had the sfiglio over my 300 which is 6' and the light is only 4'. 2x250w
i get better coverage with the new light.
the sfiglio has much bigger reflectors but didn't cover the whole tank. but a good light.

You can make a removable canopy with 2*3 frame and floor laminant that looks like real wood and it will only be about 10lbs. That's what I did on my LPS tank. It slides off and back on within seconds.
