What is the best preventive medication that we use in this hobby for our quarantine tanks? I hear prazipro but that doesn't treat everything. I hear cup ramie but that suppresses the fish appetite. I hear formalin but this is toxic. I hear malachite green. Looking for something to prevent the most parasites and bacteria since this will be my first time quarantine anything. Learned my lesson the hard way

there is no one cure all.

qt is a process to start the QT tank itself (imo) should be un-medicated, low light, quiet place for a fish to relax and de-stress after its long often rough journey, with lots of hiding places (pvc tubes) and ultra clean water. a place that it doesnt need to compete for food. a place to regain strength.

The fish should be observed for signs of problems and then treated accordingly, with dips(baths). Prazi is great for flukes and worms , fresh water or a hypo salinity for fluke and ich.

Some fish should be dipped regardless in certain dips. its a learning thing, for instance sharks that where not born in captivity should always be dipped in Prazi for worms.

Some fish get secondary infections from the travel or parasites , and need antibiotics.

even when people travel to far off places in planes or on boats we get sick from the confined space .. cramped conditions ect.. Treating those who get sick is done on a one by one basis. The QT is just a place to keep the fish so your DT is safe, not a place to treat.

Good luck I am happy to offer any specifics if you need anything.

Copper kills Ich and Marine velvet, but you need to treat at the the correct level, otherwise it doesn't do anything. Copper also doesn't kill Flukes or Worms and it doesn't do anything for wounds, bacteria or secondary infections.

A lot of what or how you treat for is where your fish is coming from. Places that get their fish directly from Divers and transshipper need to be treated one way as opposed to fish that you buy from say the LA Diver Dens, that treat their fish before they sell them. similar to to buying fish that are captive breed.

+1, Some time is even worst if u use wrong Quarantine , if is NOT to bad, I will leave along, in special big Tangs, use some Kent Garlic on food, I stop feeding Blood worms , all the time I got ick, when I use it, may be just me, but, wrong Quarantine will stress the fish more.

So correct me if I'm wrong. A person buys a fish. Places it in quarantine after a somewhat long journey depending on where we got the fish. We place in quarantine to de-stress, mellow out. This is a place where we can take care of any problems if they occur. They relax for anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending in who you are. If needed to be treated we treat, if not we still observe. Ok time is now where we put fish in our main tank. Now this wouldn't cause another stressful situation. Being moved from solidarity to a whole brand new world? It's the same thing as before we out the fish in the quarantine the first time. Only difference is it's now going into our main tank which is stressful even with peaceful fish. It's stressful cause the fish is being moved once again into another environment. There are corals, rocks, other fish that wasn't there the time they were in quarantine. So what's the point?

Stress is everywhere, from being in a small tank, to tank mates, to fighting for territories, to vibrations, to the lights going on and off, to just people walking by the tank, and different food sources than what the fish is use to. So by using a QT you're not going to eliminate stress altogether but you can give the fish a better chance to adopt to its new conditions when you do move it into the MT.

The point of the QT is not only to give the fish some down time, which is important, but it also lets the fish get use to the conditions and surrounding that it will be in, without it being throwing into right off the bat. This also includes getting the fish use to the water conditions in your MT, which are different than what it's use to, so if possible you should try and use water from your MT in your QT. Also, the QT give the fish time to identify food and start eating, which for some fish can be a major problem. And yes, it still will have some problems when you move it into the MT, especially with other fish who already have territory staked out, but it does give the fish a much better chance of making it.
