I have a 75g FOWLR that crashed at the beginning of the year.
It survived the multiple black outs in northern jersey but the system was never the same. Fish got sick and started to die off slowly.
I just restarted it and it cycled but the water quality is not as good as before. I cant control the cyanobacteria. I tried reducing the lighting, went dark for three days to kill but it keeps coming back.
Differences from now to before:
1) I started the system with a wet/dry and then took it out for a simple sump with Socks and Protein Skimmer. This time I restarted with just the sump. Both times i had Live Rock in the display. Dont know if the bio-balls helped stabilize the system. Should I go back to a wet dry?
2) I have a etss sump buddy 40 Protein Skimmer instead of Aqua Medic Turboflotor 1000 Multi SL Protein Skimmer. I love the Aqua Medic but that's in my Reef Tank now. I heard the ETSS is as good, especially for a system this small. I dont get the same dark skim as the Medic but I get a lot of skimmate, mostly dark tea color. Is this the problem?
I went less aggressive with fish so its not that I am over feeding. I only have a clown, goat fish, porcupine puffer and moray eel. I also have a very large hermit and large blue crab to help clean up left overs.
