I would like to add more lives sand to my tank. Is there a way of doing this so that it won't create a mini cycle?

Just add a little at a time. You can pour down pvc tube so it doesn't create a storm.

+1 be careful it's was bought as live becuase chances are that it isn't and will have die off. With dry sand just clean it up, let it sit for a day or two and then start adding to your reef.
