Its personal preference I would say. Having corals that pop out as you when you look at the tank is awesome aside from having the fish.. However, one part I don't like about a reef tank is that I cant get certain fish that I would love to have, mainly certain angels. You have people say reef with caution and etc but I don't have time to constantly stare at my tank to see if fish are pecking at corals or inverts so going that route can be a tricky one. Used to have a 180g just fish and it was a gorgeous tank but it just didn't do it for me. Got hit with sandy, lost the tank and everything inside and got out of the hobby for awhile and then just recently got back into it 4.5 months ago and went the reef route.. I find this way a lot more entertaining, but also a lot more costly! I have minimal corals but am always looking to increase. Learning on the go with the 57g and its quite awesome.

It always depends on your end goal. Fish Only is obviously cheaper and less requirements on highend equipment to keep your fish happy. adding coral to the mix or more in particular SPS can become a very big pain. You don't have to have all the bells and whistles but it does help keep a stable environment. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule but that's $$ you are adding onto your risks.

I prefer mixed reef but I would love to go FISH ONLY to get those real exotic fish that aren't reef friendly. I am just scared I will go bored and just sell them after X amount of weeks.

What you want is a long tank, like an 8' with rocky reef on the left third, softies in the middle and open sand on the right. Then stick an estuary/marsh in the refugium underneath. Fit the ocean into one system. If they can do it at the Biosphere project at the University of Arizona...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biosphere_2
Biosphere 2 contained representative biomes: a 1,900 square meter rainforest, an 850 square meter ocean with a coral reef, a 450 square meter mangrove wetlands, a 1,300 square meter savannah grassland, a 1,400 square meter fog desert, a 2,500 square meter agricultural system, a human habitat, and a below-ground infrastructure.

I like shallow deep reef/mangrove tanks. My next tank will be something like 8ft long, 3ft wide, 1ft deep for stingrays.
