Tang Jumped!

So I got up at like 3 in the morning to investigate a "squeek" that my little ones alerted me to. Walked past my fish tank and my Powder Brown Tang launched himself out of my tank almost hitting me. He wound up on the floor.

I quickly picked him up and put him back in the tank. He's fine now.

What the hell happened? Did I scare him?

Sometimes fish jump if something in the tank is harassing them. Take a look at his body and fins to see if something is nipping at him.

Was it a new fish that was introduced into the tank.
If so probably not settled in yet.
New fish need time to acclimate to there new tank and you approaching the tank.
There is plenty of stress for a new fish
like sending you kids to another school system

They will jump if you spook them. I've had a couple fishes jump just because.

All fish can, and will, jump if sufficiently motivated. I've had clownfish, gobies, firefish, chromis and every kind of wrasse jump. It's not a matter of if, but when. Clear screening on top of your reef is a good thing if you don't like floor fish or a free snack for your dog/cat/goat.

During my upgrade I woke up this morning to my platinum clown baked on the floor.. Broke my heart. These things happen that's why I made a DIY screen top

Yea. Don't wanna take away from the aesthetics. I'll definitely look in to it.

You probably spooked him. Some fish are more likely than others, but I've even had a Mandarin go carpet surfing. Any fish is capable of jumping given the right circumstances. The DIY screen tops are a life saver. Very easy to build and relatively unobtrusive.

Can you guys recommend any materials I can get locally? HD, Lowes, etc?
