How high do I need to make the walls around my tank to keep the fish in it from successfully jumping out? I don't want a completely enclosed canopy or to put screens or eggcrate over it. I just want to know if anybody has seen or knows how much "air" the average tang or wrasse can get.

Really not a feasible option to have high enough tank walls. I know my wrasses can get up there. I've seen 2 of them smash into my lighting fixture 12" above the water while I had my hand in the tank (separate occasions).

Go with the screen top.. Its easy to do. Go to home depot buy the stuff to make a screen and make it. Very happy with the result and have not had any issues with fish jumoing out considering I have a rimless tank

Make sure the screen is tight without any gaps. I put my screen back after water change not the correct way with about 3/4" (!) gap and I found my forktail blenny on the floor. Luckily, my dog alarmed me with some barking when he was standing over the fish. Blenny is doing fine although she was stressed for a couple of hours.

Tight screen!
