Hello, about a year ago i bought a male crosshatch trigger from DD. About four months having him he was strong, thick and healthy. He acted normal and ate with vigor. Suddenly out of nowhere he stopped eating and started acting weird. He couldn't swim normal and was hidden in the rocks. When he tried to leave the rocks he would swim like he was poisoned and immediately return to his hiding place. This lasted like 3 weeks until i had to pull him from the tank alive. He was badly bruised when i pulled him. It was like he went crazy and couldn't function normal anymore. I euthanize him. I have two golden puffers, one Aussie tusk and two adult eels (skeletor and dragon) as tank mates. They all reside in a 120 gallon tank. I do weekly 20 gallon water changes. All other fish are happy and normal. Ok, so i purchase another male crosshatch from AV about 6 months after my first trigger went nuts and passed. This crosshatch was doing awesome and ate with vigor and swam normal. Now after two months with him i notice the exact same behavior starting to happen. Just stopped eating and cant swim normal (like he is struggling to right himself) and immediately returns to the rocks. I'm going to slowly lose this fish too i bet. What is happening to my crosshatch triggers? Why only them? They are easy to keep and aggressive. I cant make sense of this. I've keeping fish now for four years at least. I have two tanks, 120 predator and a 65 reef. Only thing im guessing is that these fish are being caught with some type of agent and it takes time to settle into their systems. I really don't know. What would cause a strong fish to mentally lose it? Please help if you have any real experience with this species of fish. He just started acting weird but i have a feeling its going to get worse and im going to have to pull him too. Granted these fish aren't cheap at all....i don't get it!

Could it be something with how they were caught prior to making it to your tank? Gradually took its toll on them. Just a thought... Having happen with two sorta makes it seem like something in tank could be getting at it
I had a tusk and it was a beautiful brute!

i went through 6 pairs of CHT all succumbed to dying within a week to a month. My guess is these fish were caught using cyanide or they were brought to the surface quickly and shipped on the plane to quick which will kill them eventually. I got credited for for my first 4 pairs as they kept shipping me new ones bigger and smaller in size to the same death. eventually they blame it on me. the next ones were bought from another vendor, same problem and reshipped more pairs on credit and died also. I gave up on CHT completely unless i buy them from an existing tank system and they just outgrew the tank. I finally found a pair a juveniles living and eating in a system for over 6 months, bit the bullet and bought them. im now a happy camper as my tank i feel is complete with all the fish i want and admire except for a pair of morish idols id like to have again as the last ones i had for over 2 years and then they got an appetite for corals :(
Look for a pair that are in someones system for a long while or at the local LFS for a few months. even if you pay more, its well worth the insurance that theyre acclimated, eating pellets, healthy and normal. Good luck and dont be pushed in to buying by anyone

thanks bklynreef! I do also think these fish are being caught with some type of agent or very poor practice. He was out of the rocks this morning swimming like a ****** (no offense to anybody). Ill monitor him closely and hope for the best. I truthfully think im going to slowly lose this one too. The weird thing is they don't die, they just rot away until i'm forced to pull them and euthanize. The one i have now is really thick and strong, just cant swim right...its sad

doubt it was cyanide i dont think they have used that for a long time and besides the people that dive deep enough to catch them isnt gunna use cyanide on those fish if they brought them up too fast then they would have swim bladder issues and you would see the bulge, whats your tank paramaters also how big are the other fish in the system
