I have a fish that I believe has fin rot. One of it's fin's is partially gone, and this is pretty recent. This fish is a red maroon juvenile clown fish.
I noticed that the fin was partially gone a day or two ago, and this incident comes shortly after a small ammonia spike disaster in my tank (approximately two weeks ago) when I had to leave for a week, and I left a automatic feeder in charge, (thus I feel the ammonia spike incident weakened my fish's immune system).
Anyway, all I am wondering is if I use a special medicine to treat this fish rot, (because I do not have a quarantine tank), will the medicine weaken the bacteria that make up the biological filter in my main tank?
I'm asking, because I read from some website that many bacteria strains that specifically affect fish are gram-negative, and thus could potentially harm the bio-filter in my tank?
I also think I saw a white outline surrounding the area where my fish's fin is damaged, and I read that this is bacteria that causes fin rot, so I'm pretty sure this is what it is.
My fish (also hasn't eaten much in about 10 days) though it did eat today when I fed it, or at least I thought it did (again I read that loss of appetite is a sign that fish have bacteria infections).
Lastly, this is the only fish in the tank. I use four aerators. I use two powerheads (which push air through the water in a perpendicular fashion) as well as a Hob filter and canister filter.
I also recently changed two filter sections of my hob filter, not sure if this will cause any added uncomfortableness with the fish. I am especially not sure, since I also just performed a 30% water change on Saturday) and added a Nite out dose that is approximately for 30 gallons of water promptly thereafter doing the water change.
