I think I killed my fish with soap!!!!!!! I came home today to 2 dead tangs, blue hippo n a sailfin. Most fish have been eating like champs and had great coats on there body's. Yesterday I did a 25% water change and changed out my filter socks. The night before I washed my filter socks with vinegar in my washing machine. The next day I soaked them in vinegar and rodi water. Yesterday I put one in after the water change and everything seemed normal. I came home today after work and both tangs were dead. I also have 2 true percula clowns n a ruby wrasse. Tank has been running for about 2 months (water n rock cycled for 5weeks prior in a separate tank). There's a little foam at The top of one of my bubble traps that definitely wasn't there before. I can't think of anything else it could be.

Does any1 know what steps I should take next? 50% water change? Change carbon? Or 100% water change?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Sounds like something I did but mine was a lot worst.. I use silicone from Home Depot destroyed everything in the matter of few hours.. I'd do 50% water change change carbon then tomorrow change 10% try n do couple more small water changes after that try n dilute whatever it is.. I did 100% water change but all my stuff was dead.. Best of luck

what was the reason for the mouse pad anyway? if it was to raise the unit, try using sheets of acrylic from home depot if you need something thin, or you can use egg crate to get a little more height.

Only other thing I can think of is the mouse pad I put underneath my skimmer. It was brand new , idk .

Is your CUC dead too I thought those guys were most sensitive..IDK if you have corals,,mouse pad really? Who told you to do that? Please research these things I've researched all types of simple things and glad I did because I couldve lost everything also. Doesnt hurt to start a thread.

mouse pad didnt kill your fish although if and when it started breaking down it would have did damage but not that fast. to reduce vibration just use a saltwater vibration pad. IMHO it was the soap left over in the washing machine that did your fish in and would kill your corals as well. next time, cycle the washing machine with nothing in it for the longest period of time with hot water extra load. then put socks in for the next lead with a cap full of bleach also hot water extra load. then one more time same thing with NO Bleach. air dry completely NOT THE DRYER! you now have Reef Safe Socks clean and ready to use.

I definitely agree with the above comments. I wasnt saying the mouse pad killed everything, but it definitely would leak out something over time.

And starting a thread to ask about what to use to silence a rattling pump and whether or not a mouse pad would be a good idea, im sure would get you the answers you need quickly.

As for the sock business, I dont use any at this point so i dont know how to get all the soap out of them, but what bklyn reef said sounds like it would do the trick, and im sure he has experience with them.

never wash filter socks with soap, turn them inside out and do a clean rinse once inside out and the other just as you put it in. Could be the mouse pad is releasing dyes and stuff of that nature if its a foam one or If its the gel pads could be all the silicone an silicates.

Yeah, I didn't wash them with soap, must have been left over like ^^ said. Only coral in the tank is gsp n it's doing fine.

i did a 75% water change but there are still very little bubbles accumulating in the bubble trap. My clown fish are still alive as well as all the inverts i can find. My GSP is still kicking but idk. Im thinking maybe i should start over from scratch. I don't want anything down the line to come up, i don't know what to do now?

Had similar situation, came home and found all my SPS died and all softies close up.
My daughter was playing with her bubble gun and I gun and decided to shoot the bubbles in the sump. I did 60% water change and 10% each day after for the week. Surprisingly
didn't loose no fish but the colors took a couple weeks to come back for my zoas.
