Too much rock

People making a living selling rock might not like this post, but in my opinion the 1-2 pounds per gallon rule is not a good idea. To me, I think as long as there are ample hiding spaces and cool arches to swim around theres enough rock. Too often I see people encouraging others to load up on rock which lowers the amount of water in the tank and in contrast, room to swim happily as well.

The 1~2 lbs originates from 2 decades ago when most people kept fish as the main attraction. Dependent on fish bio-load this can still hold true for a working nitrogen cycle. These days when corals with few fish are the focus, you can get away with much less rock for biological stability.
