Agree whit all above, but before you decide how many stages, if i was you, i will buy first a TDS pen meter ($ 20), see how bad or good is the water supply (some places have 35-45 some 100 to 180 TDS) if the water is around (35-45 TDS) that the good #, if is 100 up , you should buy extra prefilters , help to stop the bad stuff to go in your RO/DI, (easy to upgrade) that will dictate how many stages, most of the time first filter got dirty , lots of rust and sediments, first filters are cheep, but will protect the bad stuff to go in expensive stages (charcoal , membrane ) give easy job to the rest and longer life, also upgrade (membrane) from BRS is easy to install and reduce the waste. Spectra sale great Silica Buster DI, NOT sure how big is you system, but if is large, got 5 stages first, then buy the upgrade , help on waste. Good water pressure (65-70 PSI) will give a good reference how big you can expend, less pressure may need a pump. I got mine 11 stages, but you don't have to go like me (i don't pay for water or electric).
