Please share what do you have in your refuge and what is the best weather its all rock all sand or all cheato or a mixture of both i would love everyones input
I have a 6"-7" sand bed section over a plenum, with some chaeto on top. A section with chaeto and other macro algaes, dragon flames, tongues, and a section with rocks and marine pure spheres.
My advice is not to have one. After a few years now with SPS. I found the best way to keep my sump. Simple is better. All I have is skimmer and heater in one section. Two reactors one carbon and one GFO. No sand no LR. Than pump and ATO in last section. Easy to clean and system running much better. A lot of hype about refugeium . Cheato and mangrove plants. You need at least the size of your tank or double to actually do what is suppose to do. Plus it looks like a mess. Also an eye sore. I got the ideal from Jake Adams. He speaks about it with Julian Sprung in a debate. Even Julian say you need a big refugeium and lot of mangroves to do what it supposed to. To me more is not always better and just other thing to go wrong. My 2 cents on refugeium. Julian has them growing outside his house and we are talking about a lot of mangroves. Not 5-12 plants....
I've been using my 90 for a fuge for many years and it does make a big difference in my water quality. I use LR and half a side with sand along with macros. I also use it as an acclimation tank for new fish to acclimate them to the DTs water chemistry and get them eating well before the competition of the DT.
Another thing that I'm trying. Only skimming at night. Of what I'm gathering these skimmers are to powerful and stripping good bacteria. So trying to see and balance that. Only way to measure that is nutrients in water. More nutrients less good bacteria. I was speaking to Jake Adams and Dr Tim about bacteria at Reef A Palooza. Very interesting stuff.
