today I almost lost my hole tank. for almost 3 years my tank has been equipment wise fine. but today I had a big problem. at about 7 am I looked at my tank and did not see any problem (sand man must have still been in my eyes). about 10 am I was
driving into the city and my wife calls and said that the power in my tank is off. so I told her to reset the gfci. so she does and reinserts the plug. pop goes the breaker. ok now we have a problem. she asks what do I do. the fish are on there side and gasping for air how can I help them.
first get out the battery powered air pumps and get air into the water. now get an extension cord and plug it into a different gfci. ok here me go POP the gfci popped. ok now lets go a different route. plug a power strip in and plug in the skimmer in to get air. pumps to circulate the water and heater to keep the temp up.
about 1 year ago I labeled all of the plugs but then did some mods on the tank. only half of the plugs were labeled (that will change this weekend). so she traced all the wires from source to plug and plugged in the needed items.
after about an hour and a lot of calls to complain to me about the lack of room and the amount of stuff I have under the tank she saved my tank and sanity.
it wound up that a heater I was thinking of replacing wound up breaking in the sump and shorting out the gfci plug. so after replacing the heater and the plug on the power strip (looked kind of cooked) and rewiring the cords back to where they go. 12 hours later all of the fish and coral all look good
I don't know about you but most of my friends wives would have told there husbands to scratch if they asked them to do what I asked my wife to do to my tank.my wife is my hero and I say thank you to her.
