In the midst of the pre-swap, frag ogling frenzy, it often gets over-looked that the Swap is an opportunity to do much more than trade and buy corals. We make every effort to make your experience an educational one by presenting demos or workshops throughout the day. We also bring in world-class speakers to help you hone your reef keeping skills. This time around we offer two outstanding presentations that should prove of interest to everyone:

Dr. Craig Bingman

"Water Testing, 1, 2, 3 - What we care about, why we care and how we measure it"

The widespread availability of new water testing techniques, such as ICP-OES, and always-on sensors has created new interest in water testing. Unfortunately, these new techniques have created as much confusion as they have solved problems. It is time to review the objectives of water testing, what parameters are truly relevant for aquariums, and how those parameters are best measured.

Speaker Bio:
A seasoned veteran of aquarium chemistry, Craig's involvement in the marine aquarium hobby reaches back to the early 1980s. He has been involved in the reef aquarium movement since the early 1990s. Author of dozens of articles, primarily in the dearly departed Aquarium Frontiers, Craig has written extensively on reef aquarium chemistry, with an emphasis on calcification and related parameters. He is also interested in auto fluorescent pigments in corals, nutrient management, foam fractionators, activated carbon, and the biochemical dynamics of semi-closed systems.

Christine Williams

"Eat Your Reef"

Why is it that reefers always end up at sushi restaurants after frag swaps? And have you ever wondered what your kole tang would taste like? I'm interested in how the food fishery intersects with the ornamental fishery...how we ethically manage to spend thousands of dollars keeping an animal alive, with great pride and joy, and then eat its brethren. Then, it's interesting to think about how these animals are fished, served and enjoyed around the world. These and other ethical dilemmas will be addressed.

Speaker Bio:
Christine Williams started keeping fish while she was still a fetus. While the aqueous environment did lend itself to the hobby, it limited her to freshwater species, and so she decided to be born several weeks early. Through sign language, she demanded that her parents convert her crib into a reef aquarium and thus started her illustrious career in marine ornamentals. After completing her studies in biochemistry and molecular microbiology she went to work at ?Animal ER? where unfortunately she was not filmed for the Animal Planet channel (though her feet did make a cameo during a rescue segment). Currently she works as Director of Research and Development for a personal care company, and makes a mean mojito. She frequently lectures on reef topics including marine animal disease, fish husbandry, human-tank zoonosis, and fish cognition. Contact Christine at [email protected].
