chaeto death cycle?

Not sure if im doing this chaeto thing wrong or what... but every so often my chaeto decides to die back and release a bunch of crap in the water before starting a growth spree again.

Also not sure if this is normal, but it also seems like it constantly sheds and pieces end up in DT.

I wonder if the "shedding" may be due to me having the chaeto rolling, and possibly its rubbing against the sharp glass edges of the baffles.

did a little reading up and some people had similar issues with inadequate lighting. Im running a 100 watt replacement CFL bulb rated at 6500k which makes lighting not seem like the issue to me.
