I personally like the look of a sand bed. You will get tons of responses both for and against sand. I think its a personal choice. You should consider what kind of fish you are going to keep. Some wrasses need/do better with a sand bed to sleep in. If you set the tank up properly and maintain it sand does not have to be the detritus magnet daemon some are convinced it is. I have also seen people using alternatives that are bare bottom but look like sand. This might be a good option for you as well.

This might not help but just my experience . Theirs no question a sand bed makes the tank look much better. But you might have to pay a price for it. I went bare bottom two years ago when I remove the sand. I never deal with cyano or diatoms since them. It's doesn't mean you can't but my system is running much better. I hated the sand storms when I had to increase flow to get rid of cyano. For me I will never deal with sand in my tanks again.

By that logic wouldn't you have much less to deal with if you got rid of the whole tank?
