"Bio-wheel" seems more a gimmick then functional. I'm assuming you're speaking of the one inside an hang-on-back filter? I had one on my freshwater tank years ago, had it for a bit but I no longer use it. Completely unnecessary in my experience. Not worth the time in my opinion, could just potentially make seeding another tank with bacteria easier. But you could do that with sand/Rock.
Bio wheel works fine. The biggest drawback is that the filter doesn't get it's water from the surface as an overflow box does. Have one on my qt tank, works fine.
