I was reading a news article thought you guys would like to voice your opinion

I feel it should be there responsibility to create a ad protecting the fish
but at the same time they shouldn't go all peta and make our hobby look like we are killing the fish and corals we put in our reefs
I feel that our hobby will make sure that there are still reefs out there and if there is a decline in something we can breed or grow replacements or create projects on trying to breed and grow corals and fish

What we learn through our hobby can and will certainly help, but to think of all the tanks out there with pieces of nature plucked from their natural habitat isn't having a negative effect is ridiculous.
The media is driven by ratings and profits.

Yes and no
so is global warming and bleaching of coral reefs

we are slowly using better fishing tactics and have many projects to protect and keep the reefs for years to come an example with the hipo tang (dory) i saw a documentary that they were catching them as hatchlings and raising them in baskets where most of them do survive if they were in the wild most of them would die to predators a small percentage survive to adulthood so doing things like this can temporarily solve problems like not being able to breed them
However i do think that lfs and these movie makers do have the responsibility whether its a lfs asking the person what kind of setup they have to making commercials on how fish (dory) cannot be raised in a fishbowl if your going to buy them, they are a responsibility and have their needs for example tangs need to swim they need big tanks, they need seaweed
If we have more responsible hobbyists then i feel the effects on the reefs would be small

Well, if you're asking me what I think I'm telling you. If we could separate economics from the subject....
Unless you're harvesting and breeding outside of the ocean you're making an impact. We can only debate the extent of that damage. If you buy stuff and put it in your tank, you're supporting an industry that takes things from reef to retail, period. If there was no demand, there'd be no market.
Should Disney be guilted into telling ppl about the impact of so many people eating popcorn while watching the movie? How bout the impacts if you want butter on it? Or the climate controlled buildings the movies are playing in, and the roads and cars that they used to get there. It's silly. They made a movie, if ppl go out and buy a dory it's on those ppl. WTF is personal responsibility. Leanordo Decaprio flies 8,000 mile on his private jet to accept an award for his efforts on the environment, gimme a break.
Man made global warming is another example of a generation misguided and led by media. Don't get me started with that one.

And less not forget one of the biggest parts of the plot in the first movie was the fish didn't want to be trapped inside a tank, yet it made many ppl want to do just that

As long as its a discussion I appreciate other options as well
I feel that the hobby has many different people and interests yes everyone needs to have a interest whether its monetary or pleasure we are still people and everything we do for our interests but that doesn't mean that you cant have any good come from it yes the store wants to make money but they do have a responsibility to care where the animal goes
yes disney is making a movie to make money currently the hippo tang is in demand and making a movie about it creates a bigger demand yes when you put something out there yes you should have the responsibility to notify people that in what they didint in the previous movie
And as i said before our hobby did create options from coral farming in the ocean to our tanks or in fish farming in the ocean or in captivity
They are breeding yellow tangs in captivity and i feel that's awesome i don't think that would have ever happened if there wasn't a hobby

Yes it is the responsibility of the buyer if he buys "dory" im sorry to say allot of fish stores misinform people or don't offer any information on the fish they sell so again yes in my opinion disney is making a movie on it so it should inform people on the animal they are "advertising"
it's very possible it's already doing this in the movie we wont know until it comes out

I saw that,, i guess the first Nemo movie sparked such an interest in the hobby yet the goto fish was clowns (which we can breed in tanks) vs Dori (which i don't know anybody that reproduced) so they're worried about the collection.
Sorry if I'm regurgitating info i just wanted to be a part of this thread

Ret Talbot gave a very good presentation at the last LIRA club meeting on this topic.
It was one of the best presentation I've seen as it was very data focused #datamatters and he has had first hand experience with touring the various collection sites around the world.
I would prefer to use the term, "educate" rather than "protect". With the first meaning to educate the public and potential new hobbyist. Whereas "protect" carries a heavier weight and has implications such as the ESA or whatever or whoever the enforcement body is that is responsible for getting a marine fish on "protected" status. Once on a protected status we wouldn't even need to have this discussion anymore.

With the release of the movie its not surprising that a lot of outlets will look to capitalize and gain publicity on a arguable topic. According to Ret, preliminary data analysis shows that there was really no correlation with increased purchase of clowfish as a result of the Finding Nemo movie. Hopefully we will see more analysis of this data to support that position.
This time around we have better data than we had 15 yrs ago and we also have hindsight, and we know what to plan for and how to measure whether or not the movie will truly have an impact on the purchase of Hippo tangs.

Another very interesting point he made was that collections that doesn't get imported into the US will just as easy shift to other countries, especially China and Japan. By having the fish imported into the US and also by working collaboratively with collection sites and establishing partnerships with oversight agencies we as a Country will offer more benefit to the preservation of this fish. Whereas the alternative countries where the import of these fishes could shift to would not be so proactive in protecting them or regulating their collections.

Like I said, it was a very good presentation by Ret, and I have a lot more opinion to share on this topic and I'm just tagging along to see others opinions.

I enjoy a good speech too, and some people have a talent for it that can speak to your heart and soul which really sends a message. Stats and studies can be used to prove any point, on any topic, no matter what side of a given subject you're trying to prove.
Reality and personal experience triumphs that ^. Can't remember how many times I've heard "I got into the hobby because of finding Nemo", even though the movie is based on the premise that these fish would rather risk it all than be trapped in a tank.
