I also thought about a major tear down, a few times last year, but my ricordiea didn't seem bothered by algae, and I didn't want to dump them. The SPS and zoos look like they were not going to make it.
My solution to byropsis was to get 6 extra yellow tangs, adding to the single one I had and then force them to eat it. After 6 months ago of training to different types of algae, in the sump I moved them all together into the main tank . Well I was 66% successful and now have 5 swimming around in harmony... as long as they don't get hungry and start fighting each other, they have mowed down my algae problem. The ones that died just didn't adapt to the bryopsis, weakened and died to bullying. If I paid closer attention to them with direct feeding, I'd probably still have all of them.
I treat tangs like I treat african cichlids. Hyper dominance theory of husbandry.
