whats a good flow of return pump for a RedSea450xl?

i was thinking Sicce pump 5.0 but i aint sure if the more flow is a good thing or not ..

Yeah, Syncra 5.0 is too big. The redsea 450 is spec'd for 1050 gph pump. But like NYreefnoob said, you have to figure head height. So the spec'd 1050 gph pump it comes with is likely doing half that at 5 foot head.

There's pretty much two camps on this. One camp, the older way of thinking was/is 10x display tank volume per hour.
The newer, and imo better more effective is 3-5 x the display's volume per hour.
Either way you have to figure head pressure.
Ime have seen many tanks settle down nicely when they went from 10x to 3-5x. It's also a good idea to match the gph your skimmer can process, to the gph your return pump is putting throu the sump.
Whatever you do get a quality pump that doesn't produce a lot of heat.
I'm a fan of Sicce, but personally would get an Eheim 1260 for that application. Which will put about 450 gph throu your display at 5', and will last for years.
