Spring water is not the same, and will not have 0 TDS. They all have some dissolved content. It's just fresh water collected, filtered for sediments, sterilized, and bottled. In fact, some spring waters have more dissolved contents than NYC tap water. Distilled water is just that, water distilled by boiling and condensing the steam, leaving impurities behind that have a different boiling point. However, even distilled water may become contaminated through the distillation apparatus itself (there is always the question of whether distilling apparatus with copper piping could leach copper into the water, although I haven't seen any tests on any brands to confirm this).
So, RO (/DI) or distilled can be used, but RO(/DI) prepared at home is economically superior to distilled. Sorry, but spring water won't cut it. Then again, there are some people who do use treated tap water and get away with it for awhile, but with all the money invested in SW, why chance it? NYC tap water is fine for my FW tank though, as a python hooked up to the sink sure beats carrying the buckets around at water change time.....
