I have a few fish that like to pick at the rocks and search for thier own food :eat:
There are tons of pods in the sump fuge, but I'm afraid the main tank may get depleted. I was thinking of placing some balls of cheato into the main tank enclosed in some mesh bags. There are a few spots I can place them where they won't be seen and will get good flow. I'm thinking if i rotate the cheato every couple of weeks from the fuge to the tank the pod population will always be replenished. has anyone tried this before?

I have never heard of that before, but people often make pod piles. You fill a strawberry basket or someting similar with a lot of small rubble, shells and the like and put it behind some rocks in the tank. The basket keeps the fish and crabs from disrupting the pile and gives an unmolested place in the display tank for pods to grow and propogate.

I could do the pod pile, but I was thinking it would be faster to just take balls of cheato direct from the fuge that's packed with pods.

My thinking is you need sufficient light to keep the cheato growing, not sure you can do that while "hiding" it behind rocks. I also hate looking at green patches in my tank:eek: :).

The type I have is pretty tough, I have to tug pretty hard when pruning. I usually pull it apart in my fuge and shake it around a bit over the cube tank before I toss it.

I used to use a breeder box for livebearers, I just cut some of the additional slats on the sides away for more circulation.

jhale i think if u put cheato in a clear zip lock poke some holes in it....and let it rest on bottom sounds like a great idea...i'm actually gonna try that....

I don't think the ziplock will give it enough flow, there's a good chance the cheato will rot in it. I was thinking of a mesh bag, like a fish net but with larger holes. I might give the strawberry container a try. you can make a little cage using two of them. place rubble in the bottom to weigh it down then cheato on top. the two containers can be zip tied together. :fish:

Jon just go out and get a floating breeder bosx and cut every 3rd slat away from the ends and drill a few holes in the solid sides and you have a great in tank fuge.

I do like Cali said.

I shake my cheato in my DT before I toss it and all the pods fall in the DT. Most of the time my male anthias eats them before they can make it to the rocks or sand.
