WOW interesting results so far. if you would have done this thread 3 years ago, more than 50% would have been 4" or more. I think most people are falling in the middle (2") because we're confused :D

O.K. so if you look over my posts from the last few days you will discover a trend in which I mention Steve Weast in nearly every one of my posts. Some people may begin to wonder if I have some sort of sick love for the guy but the truth is I was simply overwhelmed by the beauty of his tank and was convinced that whatever he was doing represented the "best of breed" for SPS dominated tanks. Now what does that have to do with the question at hand, so here's my answer/guess.

DSBs were a great idea but for the majority of tanks they simply don't work because the ratio of open sea floor necessary to process the normal bio-load imposed is too great for most tanks. That means that either we are relegated to bare bottom tanks or we need to have a cosmetic sand bed that we actively clean ourselves. That's what Steve Weast does and what I do now.

Why not just bare bottom - because its butt ugly that's why - so the answer is 1 to 2 inches that you siphon off weekly to keep clean and add add back as necessary- At least that's my answer for this month :eek:rangehat

yes... we've noticed. Everyone here who's been in the hobby for more than a month has seen his tank. Any SPS keeper here who has been in the hobby longer than that has spoken to him personally. We get it.
Drperetz, my sand bed goes anywhere from 0 to 9 inches. It's easier than you think to avoid the issues Joe mentioned above by using acrylic and PVC. Your tank over all still has a small foot print though. DSB is not plug and play as most people tend to treat them.
We can go over the confusion in another thread. I think this woud now be an interesting topic since most guys who went BB now have sand in their systems.

So now, how deep show I go with the live sand, I am thinking like 3-4 inches.
1ST i need to cover my pvcs. I have discovered an interesting way to place my rock conected to the pvc construction and have drawn a few models that I am debatting over...Sorry no pics. But whenI reach my final dicision I will post the plan so every1 can see it and tell me the errors I will face in the future...(hopefully non).

Thanx for the future help.

Also wanna thank every1 for participating in the poll... Great results.

steve emailed me back once, I'll save it forever :inlove:

I have a SSB about 1.5" in the tank and a DSB in the fuge like 7"

My observations are the sand sucks up a lot of alk and mg, but it looks good, and I think the fuge with sand and macro is keeping the No3 at bay.

What was this poll for again? you wanted to cover pvc stands?
