Hi everyone,

I have a Red Sea reefer 250 and unfortunately no refugium chamber in my sump so I plan on plumbing to my display tank sump. I'm thinking of going with a 20 long. I would like to know since my tank is cycled already will the refugium cycle effect my display tank or how does it work I plan on keeping a deep sandbed, live rock and various types of macroalgae

Since your tank is already cycled the added fuge will cycle quicker and it's effects minimal.

Few noodles for you to consider....
Shoot for 10x fuge volume per hour. So no more than 200 gph pump for 20 gal fuge.

Miracle mud instead of deep sand bed will take up much less room, add trace elements, be just as effective for nitrates, and will help grow macros big time

Run fuge light of a desired wavelength to promote green to grow in fuge, away from main display tank, and put it on timer for 14 hours opposite of when main display tank lights are on.

How much or for how long it releases trace elements can be debated, but as much nitrate removal capacity in a third the space is not much of an argument. There's also much less danger of getting big pockets that if/when disturbed or during power outage could be very bad with dsb

I have a 6 inch DSB in my refugium, with a plenum underneath. It works. Personally avoided mud since it can kick up with the currents. I've moved my water flow pattern a few times in there, if you use mud, you'll have to have slow water movement, probably with the water inflow skim across the surface to the out flow, which would also be at the surface.
