I don't think you really HAVE TO do anything, they should eventually go away on their own. I had a diatom issue when I added new white dry rocks to my tank a while back. I would just make sure no coral are getting covered and clean them if they do. That was my only experience with them so far. Lets see what someone else with more experience with this says. Tagging along!

Diatom on sand bed

Hey I'm gonna tag along, I have the same issue. Established tank w/no new rock added and all of the sudden growing brown diatoms on the sand and glass. I have just started a media reactor tumbling all in one bio Pellets to reduce my phosphates and nitrates. I'm hoping this works for me. Check your phosphates, when did you last replace your RODI's filters, do you have any nitrate factories in your system (sponges, socks)? Good luck and keep us updated.
