Excuse the dumb question, but I'd rather ask first.

I will be scrubbing my lr to get rid of some green hair algea, and I was wondering. Can I rinse it in fresh water before I put it in the rubbermaid tub with pre mixed water for furthere cleaning?

I would not use fresh water, that can kill some of the things you want to keep in the rock.

the scrubbing will remove the algae for now, but unless the cause for it is corrected it will grow back in a short time.

how bad is the algae?

do you have enough of a clean up crew to eat it. snails do wonders but you need to have enough of them.

scrubbing the algae off and then putting the LR in freshwater is kinda counter productive.

I guess I didn't really explain!

I am in the process of correcting what we believe is the cause. Thread "equipment help please", explains that I am starting all over. Had stopped using filtered water for a while. I am buying an RO/DI, dumping the old southdown sand, ordering a new tank which will be RR, and other equipment within the week.

In the mean time I will be scrubbing the algea off along with what ever ditrius is on them, and placing them in a rubbermaid tub along with a skimmer, pump, and heater. The water in the tub is being filtered through the "Tap Water Purifier" that I had laying around.
I didn't mean that I would sit the lr in fresh water, only "A QUICK RINSE", and into the rubbermaid tub.
Trying to start the process of getting the phosphates to leach out while I'm waiting on the RO/DI.

Also a bigger skimmer can help you remove the nutrients that fuel things like hair algae.
