Light Diffuser (Eggcrate)

I have a halide pendant over my tank and am considering covering it with eggcrate to prevent jumpers from escaping. Will this have any effect on the amount of light that reaches the tank?

Right, but diffusing is to spread out, will it reduce the light that gets into my tank at all? (i.e. diffuse it out of the tank)? Or will it spread it within my tank?

I was considering that, but I'd like to be able to just lift a piece of eggcrate off to get to the tank... I feel like the mesh would get annoying.

anytime you diffuse light, it reduces it's intensity/strength etc - basic wave theory (if I remember correctly) refraction or something like that.

Diffusing, reduces the overall strength of the light - I would just raise the light a bit if you want less direct intensity -

Thin high strength thread and weave it yourself which is a half day job. =0)

Jhale had posted about a plastic mesh but you have to order it online. KathyC got hers in a gardening store. =0) Hope that helps.

Do you build a frame for it? What would you frame it with?

yes it's framed. steven can give you all the details. from what he showed me it's very easy to make. he knows that name of all the materials and can point you in the right direction. good luck

I put doors on mine for access but I'm not happy with the shadow that the door frames are throwing. I've found a place to buy square acrylic rods and I'll be re-working mine in the near future to give it a cleaner look.
I will post a thread once I make the new one.
BTW - My McCoskers wrasse came right up through through the eggcrate (which DOES block a lot of light)...so the eggcrate isn't a perfect solution. When the frames are built to just the right size they lift out very easily.
I also have a lot of extra netting - if you want some, just let me know.

I would love some of the netting... this sounds like a much better solution than the eggcrate... we need to get together soon anyway, so if you can bring it when we meet up, that would rock!

Just go away for a few days All mine learned the jumping act when I leave town for a few days My record is three dried flasher wrasse in one trip.
