I have almost always used black sand in my tanks and have never had a PH problem. It's not the brand you are talking about though. The only thing you need to be concerned with, this sand will very easily scratch your glass, so be careful when cleaning algea from it.

Dave, maybe you can comment on the cleanliness of it. I've heard (never used it) that it looks great when first added, but over time detritus accumulates and the sand no longer looks quite as good. Once again, hearsay, but I've heard it often.

You're right, it shows EVERYTHING! But I still like it better than white sand, it just brings out the color and adds depth to the tank.

My tank has very little flow along the bottom, I did have another pump running my tank for a while and it was much cleaner. I got tired of looking at the huge pump in the tank and it took up so much room, i could'nt hide it with rock (it's only a 30G).

The biggest problem is the rock boring worms, you would be amazed at how large the "dust piles" are from them. I blow the sand around with a turkey baster to get the crap up into the water column. I think my new setup won't be anywhere as bad as this tank, I've taken keeping the flow along the sand into consideration when I designed the plumbing for it.
